CHRONICLE COLUMN – 19 AUGUST 2024 – WHAT ARE WE?

In June, I raised a question, which I believe is critical not only to our identity, but to the wellbeing of the community.

The question: Are we part of Southeast Queensland or are we the Capital of the Darling Downs and Southwest Queensland?

I pondered if this uncertainty about identity, is hindering our ability to drive change, attract tourists, win major projects, build brand, and deliver business growth and sustainability.

Since, then, it has been suggested, that the uncertainty, hinders the development of a clear vision and impedes consistent messaging about the region.  Do you agree?

I have heard from many parts of the community on this matter.  But I have not heard what the benefit are of identifying as part of Southeast Queensland.  If this is your view, can you share the benefits you see, with me?

What Are We

What are We!

Currently, my view on the information I have remains steadfast.  As articulated in the article that I believe that our identity lies wholly as Australia’s biggest inland city (other than the Capital), built on its rich traditions of country, the Capital of the great Darling Downs and Southwest and we should remove ourselves out of the shadows of southeast Queensland.

In August, following this theme, I went on to say, that the identify crisis confusion – about whether we are we regional or part of southeast Queensland, makes us an easy political pawn.  Case provided, was my view of the inequitable application of the law relating to the payroll tax discount, which results in our small business community being an estimated 33 million dollars worse off, then small businesses in other regions.

Last week, I had the privilege to attend the Regional Institution of Australia National Summit, which further reinforced my view, that Toowoomba’s identify lies in regional Australia.  Why? Because it shares and is aligned to the many challenges and opportunities of other regions across our nation.  Whether that be renewables, resources, food security, its role in regional and rural health care, or the like.

Last week, the Toowoomba Business Sentiment Index, by McCrindle concluded that Toowoomba is more likely to be seen as regional Queensland than part of Southeast Queensland.

It is my strong view, that our elected officials must take a public position on this issue.

What is your view?
