25 March 2024 – Future Jobs

Is your business planning for the future workplace?

The World Economic Forum recently released work and workplace trends to watch in their Future of Jobs 2024 report. They concluded that analytical thinking, creative thinking and AI and big data will be the top, in demand skills by 2027. Other skills anticipated to be in high demand are authentic leadership, social influence, curiosity, and commitment to lifelong learning.

Investment in re-training and upskilling of employees and employers is deemed to be critical now. Why? Because the report says 44% of our current workforce core skills will be disrupted by these suggested trends.

Future Jobs and Training

Currently, the research indicates that six out of 10 people in the workforce will require training before 2027, but only half of workers currently believe they have access to adequate and necessary training opportunities. Do you have a training plan for all your staff? Any plan? I don’t.

As our businesses are intended to continue to be more and more automated, other key future skills identified included the need for talent management, a focus on personal motivation and understanding self, customer service and service delivery and training in resilience, agility, and flexibility. Are these training courses you have in place or have thought about?

My readings of the findings are that they suggest, the generalist: a person whose knowledge, aptitude and skills are applied to a field as a whole or a variety of different fields, as defined by dictionary.com will be ultimately, more valuable to the employer, than the specialist. Is that your view?

There has been much written on workforce and workplace trends in the coming years. Articles and research by Harvard Business School, Forbes, The Australian Institute, Jobs Queensland, and many others. Whilst their conclusions are varied, there is a common thread of the need to be prepared for the impact of, AI, on our future workplace. Are you an AI adopter?

What do you see as the future of your workplace? Your challenges. Your opportunities. What are you doing to be prepared?
