CHRONICLE COLUMN – Empowering the next generation with financial literacy– 20 April 2025
Managing money is a lifelong skill, yet many young Australians enter adulthood without a solid understanding of financial basics. That’s why People First Bank has developed financial literacy workshops for Year 11 and 12 students – equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to manage their finances now and into the future.
Launched in Toowoomba last year, these workshops cover practical, real-world topics that school leavers need, including budgeting, personal finance, scam awareness and understanding credit reports.
The response has been overwhelming – we have already delivered 15 workshops across South East Queensland, with another 10 booked. Schools clearly see the value in financial education, and we are working closely with them to make these sessions a lasting part of the curriculum.
The impact of financial literacy extends beyond the classroom. Many parents and guardians may not have had access to this kind of education themselves, and we have seen how these workshops spark important conversations at home. When students share their knowledge with their families, it benefits the entire household, helping more people make informed financial decisions.
Making financial literacy education accessible is just one of the ways we support the community. With 150 years of history in the Toowoomba region, these workshops reflect our deep commitment to supporting local families and future generations.
As demand continues to grow, we are eager to expand further across the region. Schools interested in participating can contact Philippa Garmany, People First Bank Leader, Strategic Partnerships, at garmany.p@heritage.com.au, or via the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce.
At its core, this initiative is about more than financial literacy – it’s about making a lasting difference. By empowering young people with financial knowledge, we want to set them up for long-term security and success. And that’s an investment worth making.
